There is a famous anecdote in Greece about Matt Damon and a movie he was staring in, Jason Bourne. Part of the action was taking place in Athens, in the midst of the economic crisis and anti-austerity protests, in 2011-2012. Producers initially planned on shooting in Greece but bureaucracy and inflexibility of the Greek system drove them to Tenerife, where they finally filmed the scenes.

It had been the latest and most famous example of a deficiency, with a “glorious” past: the production of the films Hercules, Troy and Alexander and an Onassis mini series.

This has all changed.

David Cronenberg is the latest Hollywood star to announce that he picked Greece for the location of his next film. “Crimes of the Future,” a sci-fi movie, will be shot in summer.

Within the last three years, the National Centre of Audiovisual Media and Communication – EKOME has supported a total of 125 productions, 60 of which were international.

A total of 18 international productions are expected this year and revenues for the state coffers could reach 90 million euros.

The Disney+ movie “Greek Freak” about the life of Giannis Antetokounmpo, the famous NBA star, is the most highly anticipated.

The film “Greek Freak” will be released on the Disney+ streaming service. It will recount the journey of Giannis Antetokounmpo and his brother Thanassis from undocumented immigrants in Greece to basketball stars in NBA.

Others include the third part of the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the new film by Rian Johnson “Knives Out 2” starring Daniel Craig, episodes of the 3rd season of the TV series “Jack Ryan” and the second season of the Apple TV series “Tehran”.

Knives Out 2 and 3 are coming to Netflix, which reportedly paid more than $400 million for Rian Johnson’s murder mystery sequels.

The Greek state tries to establish Greece as a “favorite destination for filming”. To this end, along the variety of landscapes the country offers, it has introduced competitive incentives: a 40% cash rebate and a 30% tax relief.
