Greece sent defense material and medical supplies following the Ukrainian government’s request.

Two C-130 airplanes departed Elefsina base with military equipment and Air Force staff on Sunday. On the same day, an Aegean Airlines airplane took off carrying medical supplies and basic food staples.

Supplies will be delivered to Poland and from there to Ukraine. The mission was accompanied by Deputy National Defense Minister Nikos Hardalias.

Greek victims of the Ukraine war

About a dozen Diaspora Greeks lost their lives during Russian aerial attacks on the villages of Sartana and Buhas. The village of Buhas is located about 70 kilometers north of Mariupol.

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs  made a protest demarche to the Russian Ambassador in Athens, Andrey Maslov, regarding the attacks on the villages of Sartana and Buhas.

In this context, the Secretary General also delivered a relevant note verbale, in which it is stressed, inter alia, that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is appalled by the abovementioned unprovoked military attacks and calls on Russia to respect international humanitarian law and halt attacks targeting civilians.

Also, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated Greece’s particular interest in the security of Greek citizens and Diaspora Greeks in the territory of Ukraine and repeated its appeal to the Russian Federation, which carries out attacks in the region, for respect of their rights and the protection of their lives.

Taking Greeks out of Ukraine

Greek Foreign Affairs minister Nikos Dendias, Greek ambassador Frangiskos Kostelenos, dispatched to the Consulate General of Mariupol (Marioupoli), and Consuls General Manolis Androulakis and Dimitris Dochtsis at Odessa held a videoconference on Sunday to discuss best ways of helping Greeks and expatriates in the war-torn country.

Also attending was Ambassador to Bucharest Sophia Grammata, who has assumed the coordination of citizens arriving to Moldova and Romania.

Consul Androulakis informed the minister that the mayor of Sartana village has asked all residents to evacuate to Mariupol, nearly ten kilometers away.
